The Difference Between Knowing Something and Embodied Understanding
The Difference Between Knowing Something and Embodied Understanding
Have you ever found yourself saying, "Yes, I know that," when given advice or insight on a particular issue but found that you weren't able to change your behaviour or thinking patterns? This is because consciously knowing something and fully embodying it are two entirely different things. At some point or another, we've all struggled with turning knowledge into action. In this blog post, we'll take a deeper dive into the difference between knowing something and embodied understanding, and why the latter is essential for personal growth and transformation.
“Knowing” something is not the same as embodying it
When we "know" something, we possess information on a particular topic consciously. For instance, if someone mentions the importance of setting healthy boundaries, we may nod our heads in agreement and understand the concept but may not use it in our lives consciously. This is where embodied understanding comes in. Embodiment occurs when we integrate knowledge into our actions, behavior, and thought processes because we have fully integrated it into our being.
Embodiment
There's a reason embodied understanding is crucial to personal growth and transformation. When we embody a concept, we don't just have knowledge in our brains. Instead, our whole being is aligned with that knowledge, making it easier for us to apply it in our lives. The wisdom has dropped down into our whole being. Furthermore, embodied understanding allows us to express our authenticity, act in integrity, and show up as our true selves.
Patience & meeting ourselves where we are at
The journey towards embodied understanding can be long and take time to fully integrate. It is a process of learning, introspection, and practice. This is why patience is of the utmost importance when it comes to this process. We must be gentle with ourselves and allow ourselves to take the time we need to integrate knowledge consciously into our lives.
It’s not a race
It's essential to note that everyone's journey will look different. We must go at a pace that is comfortable and right for us. It's not a race or a competition to see who can embody a concept the fastest. Everyone's experience is unique, and it's essential to honor and respect that.
Becoming more aware
One way to increase the likelihood of fully embodying a concept is through mindfulness and embodiment practices. These practices allow us to tune in to our bodies, notice our habitual thought patterns, and increase our awareness of our emotions. When we are more aware of our bodies, we can more easily identify areas where we may be resistant to embodying a particular concept.
Finally…
In conclusion, it's important to recognise that consciously knowing something and embodying it are two different things. Embodied understanding allows for personal growth, transformation, and authenticity. However, the journey towards embodied understanding can be long and may not happen instantly. It's imperative to have patience and be gentle with ourselves along the way. With mindfulness and embodiment practices, we can set ourselves up for success on this journey.
